London, Acklam Road/Kidsactive Play Space

Hidden under the Westway, a major overpass in West London, Acklam Play Space occupied a two storey building with three outdoor areas.

The facilities included sensory rooms using music, projected patterns and other light effects that enabled users to 'tune' the room. All play structures were under the roof of the overpass. The cars and lorries which could be heard and felt thundering overhead and the London Underground trains running directly beside it made this the most futuristic of urban playgrounds.

Set up in 1969 as Acklam Adventure Playground, in 2000 it became Acklam Play Space, run by Kids Active a division of KIDS the leading charity for inclusive play, working with disabled children, young people and their families.

These images were taken in 2003, the playground closed in 2008.
